After a year that's already seen the administration open the Arctic Refuge to development, gut staffing at land agencies and roll back critical conservation rules, another blow has landed with the nomination of former Congressman Steve Pearce (R-NM) to run the Bureau of Land Management.
Pearce is a controversial politician and part of the fringe movement to privatize public lands. His nomination must be a non-starter!
Pearce's political career—both in and out of Congress—has been a lightning rod for criticism. He has regularly championed selling off public lands, opposed protections for special places and worked to make it easier for oil and gas companies to operate on public lands without paying their fair share. His nomination sends an unambiguous message that the administration intends to continue with its destructive agenda of dismantling and privatizing public lands.
Mere months ago, millions of Americans expressed outrage at a failed Senate effort to force public land sales. Now our senators must once again stand up and protect our public lands from a nominee who will do nothing to protect them if confirmed.
Thank you for your advocacy and support.
Sincerely,
