From Ansel Adams to George A. Grant, photographers have long been inspired by America’s public lands. Now The Wilderness Society is inviting photography lovers to add their own images to that legacy and help show the incredible places that are worth handing down to future generations.
As part of The Wilderness Society’s Public Lands: Hand ’Em Down, Not Over effort, we’re launching the 2026 Wilderness Photo Contest, a photography contest celebrating America’s public lands and the landscapes, wildlife and outdoor moments worth protecting.
If you are a passionate photographer, we invite you to participate!
If you’re not a photographer yourself, you can still help by sharing this opportunity with the photographers in your life: family, friends, colleagues or anyone whose work captures the beauty and freedom of the outdoors.
We’re looking for photographs of America’s public lands that remind people what is at stake and why these places are worth handing down.
Contest images will help show millions of people what public lands make possible: clean water, wildlife habitat, outdoor traditions, special memories and the freedom to roam.
Contest details:
Entries open: July 7, 2026
Deadline: August 31, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET
