The Bureau of Land Management is moving forward with an industry-requested rule that could clear the way for massive oil and gas projects in Alaska’s National Petroleum Reserve, also known as the Western Arctic, without the project-by-project environmental review and public involvement currently required.
The Western Arctic sustains wildlife, clean water for communities and ways of life that have endured for generations. But this proposed rule would constrain BLM’s ability to reject major development projects and could allow massive industrial-scale oil and gas projects to move forward with far less environmental and public scrutiny.
BLM is accepting public comments for 60 days and will hold three virtual public meetings on Zoom where members of the public can provide verbal comments:
September 22: 5–8 p.m. Alaska Time
September 23: 9 a.m.–12 p.m. Alaska Time
September 24: 1–4 p.m. Alaska Time
If you want to make a public comment during one of these meetings, you must RSVP in advance.
Can't attend? You can still make your voice heard. Take action online with our letter urging BLM to protect the Western Arctic and preserve the public’s role in decisions about our shared public lands.
No fossil fuel company should get a blank check to develop the Western Arctic.
