Legislation from Utah’s Sen. Mike Lee and Rep. Celeste Maloy that would undermine protections for Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in southern Utah is moving forward quickly.
If successful, this attack would unravel years of community-driven planning and threaten one of America’s most treasured landscapes.
The Grand Staircase-Escalante land-use plan, finalized in 2025, is the result of more than two years of collaboration with Tribal Nations, local communities, scientists, recreationists and the public. It provides a clear roadmap to protect the monument’s cliffs, canyons, plateaus and badlands—while ensuring people retain the freedom to hike, camp, climb and explore this remarkable landscape for generations to come.
Overturning this plan risks protections for wildlife habitat, fragile watersheds, cultural resources and recreational access across nearly 1.9 million acres of public land—and reopens the door to reckless drilling and mining.
This is part of a broader strategy to hand over our public lands to private interest and industrial exploitation—places that belong to all of us.
Thank you for your advocacy and support.
Sincerely,
