As wildfire season begins, Senator Mike Lee (UT) is pushing a bill that would gut protections for our wildest forests and force unnecessary logging.
Introduced by Senator John Barrasso (WY) and backed by Lee, S. 140 could make wildfires worse by overthinning naturally resilient forests and introducing more potential for human ignition at a time when wildland firefighting forces are already stretched thin by the Administration’s reckless cuts.
It would set arbitrary annual logging acreage targets for the Forest Service without considering high-priority fire risk areas or consulting the best available science. To make matters worse, the bill would nullify protections for 45 million acres of undeveloped “roadless” forests, expediting the Administration’s attempted repeal of the overwhelmingly popular Roadless Area Conservation Rule.
This bill is a wolf in sheep's clothing—it is masquerading as a wildfire prevention effort but will only ensure that current and future generations are robbed of the incredible forests that offer all of us clean air, drinking water and freedom to explore the outdoors.
Thank you for your advocacy and support.
Sincerely,
