Momoko—The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) oversees more than 245 million acres of America's public lands, and it has a new Director: former Congressman Steve Pearce.
As a representative for New Mexico, Steve Pearce publicly backed the sell-off of public lands—putting drilling and mining interests ahead of clean water, wildlife and public access.
At a time when public lands face growing threats, we want to hear from supporters like you: Do you believe the BLM should prioritize public interest over corporate profits and keep public lands in public hands?
Steve Pearce has a long legislative track record of pushing a pro-sell-off agenda:
- Back in 2005, Pearce voted for an ultimately failed provision in the budget reconciliation bill that would have allowed the sale of public lands at far below market rates to mining companies.
- In a 2012 letter written to then House Speaker John Boehner, Pearce argued to "divest” the government of public lands, highlighting BLM lands as an especially good opportunity for savings.
- And in 2016, Pearce cosponsored a bill to speed up the sale or exchange of some nationally managed public lands, including BLM lands.
Under Pearce's leadership, millions of acres of cherished public lands will essentially be up for grabs. If you're concerned about the future of these landscapes, take our quick survey and make your voice heard >>
We need to hold the BLM accountable for making sure wild places are protected—not sold off to the highest bidder. Thank you for taking the survey, and for all you do to safeguard the wild places that sustain America's wildlife, protect clean air and water, and preserve our freedom to explore and enjoy our natural world.
Sincerely,

Margot Krieger

P.S. The Wilderness Society is fighting back against efforts to sell off public lands and weaken protections for the places we all cherish. Please make a gift today to help defend public lands and ensure they endure for generations to come.
