The administration just launched a staggering attack on two of America’s treasured national monuments, slashing more than 90% of Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante in southern Utah.
On Monday, President Trump signed proclamations stripping protections from roughly 3 million acres of these extraordinary monuments.
Grand Staircase-Escalante is now reduced from 1.87 million acres to just 181,500 acres and Bears Ears is reduced from 1.36 million acres to 121,100 acres.
These monuments protect extraordinary wildlife, irreplaceable cultural and Tribal heritage, world-class geologic and paleontology resources and the freedom of future generations to know these places as they are today.
They belong to all of us, and they should be handed down to future generations, not handed over to drilling and mining interests.
The administration is ignoring Tribal Nations, local communities, and millions of people who want to protect these remarkable landscapes.
This is not the first time these monuments have come under attack. In 2017, the administration slashed Bears Ears by 85% and Grand Staircase-Escalante by nearly half.
Americans fought back then, and we must fight back again.
Thank you for standing up for our public lands.
Sincerely,
