Momoko, public lands bring us together. They're one of America's best ideas: lands that belong to us all.
But we have to fight to keep them that way. According to The New York Times, a forthcoming USDA memo could open more than 5 million acres of recommended wilderness in our national forests to timber harvest and motorized vehicle access, threatening clean drinking water, wildlife habitat and our freedom to hike, camp and explore.
This is just one piece of a larger effort to weaken the protections that keep our forests healthy and accessible. The administration is also dismantling the U.S. Forest Service, pushing to repeal the Roadless Area Conservation rule—which safeguards more than 45 million acres of national forest lands—and clearing the way for more logging, mining and development on the public lands and waters we all share.
We cannot allow this to stand, Momoko. Once iconic places like the Tongass National Forest in Alaska are opened for development, the damage can't be undone.
