The administration is moving quickly to revoke the 20-year oil and gas ban in New Mexico’s Greater Chaco Region. This reckless reversal would endanger sacred sites, threaten clean air and water, and rob future generations of the freedom to experience this living, ancestral landscape.
In 2023, the Department of Interior approved a 20-year mineral withdrawal that protects more than 336,000 acres surrounding Chaco Culture National Historical Park from new oil and gas leasing. This withdrawal reflected the decades-long call of Pueblo, Hopi and other Tribes and Indigenous peoples to safeguard one of the most sacred sites in the Southwest.
Those hard-won protections are now at greater risk than ever. Reopening the Greater Chaco Region to more drilling would jeopardize ecological and cultural resources, the health of local communities and the future of this irreplaceable landscape.
This is the last chance to make a difference for Chaco.
