Bad news for wilderness: the Department of the Interior has announced a sweeping “review” of wilderness management policies that threatens 200 million acres of the nation’s last undeveloped places.
The policies help ensure that designated wilderness areas managed by the Bureau of Land Management, the Fish and Wildlife Service, and the National Park Service receive the protections Congress and the American people intended.
Changes to these policies could have grave consequences, shattering the natural tranquility many seek on public lands and preventing identified places from ever receiving Congressional wilderness designation in the future. Current and future generations could lose the freedom to experience these special places.
