We're writing with some bad news: The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee has voted to advance the nomination of Steve Pearce to the full Senate floor—meaning his final confirmation could be imminent.
Pearce is a hardline politician who has championed selling off public lands, opposed protections for special places and tried to make it easier for fossil fuel corporations to exploit public lands with impunity. If he is confirmed, the nation's largest manager of public lands will be led by a figure who has criticized Teddy Roosevelt's "big ideas" of establishing national forests and parks while calling to "reverse [the] trend" of public lands ownership.
Public lands provide clean air and water, protect wildlife habitat and ensure the freedom to explore the outdoors for future generations. Americans recognize their value. Just this year, Colorado College polling found that 84% of Western voters across party lines believe the rollbacks of public lands protections are a serious issue.
Thank you for your advocacy and support.
Sincerely,
