The administration is moving swiftly to advance oil and gas leasing in the sensitive coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge, where polar bears den and caribou give birth to their young.
Leasing these unspoiled lands would bring heavy machinery, roads, infrastructure and pollution to areas that are highly sensitive to disturbance—prioritizing corporate interests over the Alaska Native Peoples who depend on the caribou, their freedom to live from the land, and the health of the Arctic Refuge for present and future generations.
The Bureau of Land Management is currently accepting comments on which tracts should be leased, including areas of special concern, as a key step toward the first of four planned lease sales. We have until March 5 to weigh in.
We must convince the BLM not to lease caribou calving grounds, polar bear critical habitat, or any lands on the coastal plain with low oil and gas potential.
Thank you for your advocacy and support.
Sincerely,
